The Indian Dental Association held its  “69th INDIAN DENTAL CONFERENCE” (IDC) with the theme – “Roadmap towards Smart Dentistry”, from 19th to 21st February 2016 . The Delhi State Branch hosted the event at The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel, 1CBD Ground, Raja Surajmal Road, New Delhi.

The Congress was formally inaugurated by Shrimati G. Rohini, Chief Justice of Delhi High Court by lighting the traditional lamp in the presence of Mr. Satyendar Jain, Minister of Health, Govt. of NCT of Delhi and Prof. Dibyendu Mazumder, President, Dental Council of India at 6:00PM on19th February 2016. Amongst other renowned honoraries present on the dias at the occasion were Dr. Nairn Wilson, President, British Dental Association; Dr. Alias Thomas, President, IDA-H.O.; Dr. Ashok Dhoble, Hon. Sec. Gen., IDA – H.O.; Professor Dr. Mahesh Verma , Organising Chairman IDC 2016; Dr. J. R. Sabharwal, Organizing Secretary, IDC-2016; Dr. J. S. Walia, Conference Secretary- IDA- H.O. Dr. Vikas Aggarwal, Hon. Chairman, CDE; Dr. Rajeev Gupta, Hon. Chairman, CDH. This prestigious conference came back to Delhi after a gap of thirty years.

Speaking on the occasion Shrimati Rohini said, it was an immense pleasure to see the entire hub of dental professionals under one roof and she emphasized the importance of a beautiful smile which helps in spreading happiness among all. She expressed her confidence that this Congress will create awareness and work in the direction of providing good oral health for the community.

Mr. Satyendar Jain, Minister of Health, Govt. of NCT of Delhi said that he felt happy to be amongst a gathering of dental professionals and emphasized on good oral health as it leads to good general health. He appreciated the good work being done by dental institutions such as MAIDS in providing better dental health facilities in the general population of Delhi and NCR. He informed that the government is working on schemes which focus on having more mobile dental clinics (vans) and specialized Mohalla dental clinics and the government plans to open more dental institutions similar to MAIDS. He felt the need for more post graduate seats in the country so as to have a good ratio between passing out dental graduates and prospective post graduate seats.

Prof. Dibyendu Mazumder, President, DCI, congratulated the organizing committee for holding such a congress which includes national as well international speakers as well as companies bringing in new technologies and recent advancements in dentistry. He acknowledged the need for better dental health in the country and threw light upon the new policy changes that might be coming in the near future.

Dr. Nairn Wilson, President, British Dental Association, spoke about changing trends in dentistry and further co-operations amongst the oral health care professionals to recognize and make an important contribution towards general health transforming the considerations of oral health care economics.

Professor Dr. Mahesh Verma , Chairman IDC 2016, laid emphasis on good oral health being a vital route towards overall general health. He also highlighted that the 69th Indian Dental Conference in Delhi shall be a platform that would provide plethora of knowledge as it has brought together 57 National speakers, 17 International speakers and 3500 delegates in the field of dentistry. He mentioned that 300 free papers and 500 E-posters presentations from across India were slated in the conference. These shall give a chance for emerging dentists to showcase their talent. He gave an insight into the Pre conference courses that were held on 18th February and included workshops by the top- notch dental professionals. He also informed about that the entry to the Trade exhibition which has about 300 booths and 180 national and international companies shall be free to all. This would attract Dentists and students in large numbers from Delhi and its neighboring states.

Dr. Ashok Dhoble, Hon. Sec. Gen., IDA – H.O., propounded the commencement of national accreditation program by IDA for Indian dental hospitals and clinics. He paid tributes to the legendary Padambushan Dr. Rafiuddin Ahmed, the father of Modern Dentistry in India and founder of the IDA. Dr Ahmed was remembered as a visionary pioneer with tremendous contributions towards dental education in India. He most generously donated his ancestral house to start the Calcutta Dental College, the first Dental College of India. Dr. Ashok Dhoble invited his family members on to the stage for felicitation by the Chief Guest. A documentary prepared by IDA on him was also shown on this occasion.

IDA National awards were presented to IDA office bearers of various state and local branches for their valuable contributions and activities of IDA. The inauguration ceremony was gratified with an enthralling performance by TRINITY ballet by Sadhya followed by an inaugural dinner at the banquet hall.

The pre-conference courses that were held on 18th February were attended by more than 350 delegates. This included 18 courses conducted by eminent National and International speakers from the dental fraternity. The courses conducted were of full day and half day courses along with hands on workshops. To mention a few among these were- “Endodontic Restorative Workshop” conducted by Dr. P. D. Joshi; “Advanced Endodontics” by Dr. Vivek Hegde; “The first step to Neuromuscular Dentistry” by Dr. Curtis Westersund and Dr. R. Raveendranathan; “Dental infection control and occupation safety” by Dr. Ragunath Puttaiah.

Post conference course at MAIDS on Dental Safety (Train the Trainer) Workshop was conducted by Dr. Ragunath Puttaiah(USA), Prof. Dr. Mahesh Verma and Dr. Prashanth Konatham(USA).

The vast scientific program was spread over three days in 6 halls with 57 national and 17 international speakers. The topics covered were ranging from advanced cutting edge technological applications to topics of interest to general practitioners. Free papers are the apt venue to showcase research and clinical materials by students and young faculty. There were 300 free papers presented and more than 500 E- posters from all across the country. An array of illustrious judges analysed these papers and posters to shortlist and announce Best Papers and Posters in various categories.

The year’s Colgate Oration was presented on 19th February by Dr. Amid I. Ismail, Dean Dental Education, Kornberg School of Dentistry, Temple University on the theme – “ A New Era for Restorative Dentistry: Tooth Preservation”. Dr. Amid I. Ismail, an active researcher for over 30 years spoke about the changing concepts in caries classification with the International Caries Classification and management system bringing the best current science to promote an integrated model for caries management. Using the ICCMS principles he insisted on “preservation of tooth structure and restore only when indicated”. He expressed that we are at a new transformational point in caries management that will challenge and change the current paradigm.

The Dr. R. Ahmed Oration was presented on 20th February by Prof. Dr. S. G. Damle, Vice Chancellor of Maharishi Markandeshwar University. Dr. Damle whose pioneer research work comprises of role of fluorides, Preventive Dentistry and Pediatric Endodontics spoke about “Dental Caries; A disease of Modern Civilization?” In his view, oral diseases are caused or influenced by same preventable risk factors as over 151 non communicable diseases. Worldwide, 60-90% of children are affected by tooth decay. Although rarely life threatening, dental diseases are a major problem for health service providers in both developed and developing countries because of their high prevalence and high treatment cost, therefore a proper understanding of pathological process and a coherent knowledge of preventive measures is of utmost importance. Dental surgeons play a pivotal role in early diagnosis and timely management of the carious process.

Other eminent International and National key note speakers included, Dr. Ragunath Puttaiah, Dr. Chad Gehani, Dr. Angelo Troedhan, Dr. Curtis Westersund, Dr. Praveen Kudva, Dr. Steve Morgano, Dr. Moez I. Khakiani, Dr. Porus Turner, Dr. Noshir Mehta, Lt. Gen (Retd.) Vimal Arora, Dr. Alexanderos Manolakis, Dr. P.D. Joshi, Dr. Anish Naware, Dr. Prasanth Konatham Haribabu, Dr. Sanjay Joshi and Dr. Suresh Meshram,. The scientific sessions on all three days saw a huge attendance and were well appreciated by the delegates.





The trade exhibition was attended by more than 4000 delegates. The facilities provided were well appreciated by the traders and the delegates. Almost all the corporate were present in the air conditioned German trade hanger and were seen actively interacting with the visiting delegates.





On 20thevening, there was IDA National Award Ceremony to present awards to IDA office bearers for their valuable contributions. Along with them Certificate of Appreciation was given to COC members which was followed by Gala Banquet and a musical night by Mohd. Irfan.





The 4th Central Council meeting of this year was held on 19th February,2016 at 11am followed by All India President Secretary Workshop. On the 20th IDA Annual General Meeting was held at 2pm onwards where the incoming president Dr. Tilak Raj took over office from Dr. Alias Thomas. This was followed by an open session and the first Central Council meeting of this year.

Some of the firsts for an IDA conference ever included Radio jingles on FM by Harish Bhimani and full page coverage in leading National daily. All COC members were easily identifiable by the Blue Jacket, custom tailored exclusively for them.

All together, the 69th Indian Dental Conference was truly an epic extravaganza setting high standards and evolving new trends in various dental fields. The conference brought an amalgamation of views and practices of dental professionals all across the globe and left the delegates enriched with knowledge and savoir-faire in dental expertise.
